5 unique activities to do in East Devon

If you are a traveller who is always looking for a unique experience whilst on holiday, then you are going to love these 5 activities available in East Devon.

  • Beer Quarry Caves

The Beer Quarry Caves are vast man-made caverns created from centuries of excavation to supply many famous cathedrals such as St. Paul’s, the Tower of London and Windsor Castle with the Beer stone. The first quarry was worked by the Romans by hand; each small block weighing 4 tons was carted by horse and cart to the beach where it was transported by barge around the UK.

Take an hour long guided tour around these amazing underground cathedrals journeying through the Roman, Saxon, Norman and modern eras of the caves.

  • Llama trekking across Jurassic coast

For an enjoyable but unusual day activity you can take part in a guided walk with a Llama. These gentle animals carry your refreshments so you can enjoy the views and dramatic scenery of the Jurassic Coast all within the safety of a 330 acre working farm sharing sections of the South West coast path.

  • The Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary is one of the UK’s most famous animal charities – an international animal welfare organisation working to protect donkeys and mules worldwide.

Their headquarters are based in Sidmouth, where you can go and meet the animals and the work that the charity does. There are no commercial attractions here and it is free admission and parking so you can spend as much time as you wish walking in the beautiful countryside and in the Main Yard where you can meet the donkeys who love fuss. Check out their website before your visit to see if they have an exciting event on that you can take part in. They also allow dogs in the sanctuary.

  • Escot Gardens

This award winning attraction set in 220 acres has lots to offer for everyone from birds of prey displays, red squirrel encounters, a giant maze, otter feeding, wild boar, forest drop slide, letter boxing and restaurant. Escot is a fantastic day out no matter the weather and for all the family.

  • Hush Farms

If you want to learn something a little different, then Hush Farms is the place for you. From their East Devon farm they provide a wide variety of land based training courses such as Chainsaw courses, ATV training, 4×4 off-roading, tractor driving, horse in harness ploughing, horse whispering and shepherding to name a few. They can even tailor the courses to your personal requirements and most courses are NPTC & LANTRA approved so you could leave with a qualification. This is a fantastic day out for people who like to learn practical skills outside in the beautiful Devon countryside.
